Observe the site through the seasons
Sketch the available space and mark buildings, paths and existing trees. Record sunlight at different times of day and places where water collects after rain. Leave access for ordinary maintenance rather than filling every available corner.
Before selecting trees, consult local extension guidance for your climate and soil. A nursery description is a starting point; mature dimensions and site conditions determine whether a tree is a sensible fit.
